WHAT TO EXPECT

What is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is concerned with unforeseen and neglected dental issues that require immediate attention.

Z

We understand dental emergencies can happen at any time. Whenever you are in extreme pain, have profuse bleeding, or there is swelling in your jaw or mouth, it probably constitutes a dental emergency.

Z

Emergency dentistry always attempts to provide immediate relief for whatever pain or discomfort a patient is feeling. If a tooth has been knocked out, the desired solution would be to reattach the tooth to the socket. If that’s not possible, the treatment shifts to treating the pain associated with the situation.

Z

Whenever you have soft tissue bleeding, the dentist will try to heal the wound.

Z

For severe toothaches, the dentist will first try to find the cause of the pain, then offer medication to relieve that pain.

Z

If a tooth infection is left untreated for a long period of time, it can lead to a dental abscess. This is extremely painful. An abscess is a major tooth infection that can settle into your jawbone and the floor of your mouth. If it does, oral surgery may be necessary in order to remove the infection.

What is considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental problem that requires immediate attention. This includes the following:

Severe toothache

Badly cracked tooth

Knocked-out tooth

Dental abscess (swelling of your face and jaw)

Extruded (partially dislodged) tooth

Severe soft tissue injury (gum / tongue / cheek injuries – if bleeding will not stop)

Lost or broken dental restoration

Broken / loose braces that injure your soft tissue

We only attempt to extract a tooth as a last resort, this depends on the situation and also the extent of the damage. Sometimes there may be no other option but for a tooth or multiple teeth to be extracted.
